By laminating a middle layer of Polyethylene (PE) between two outer layers of Polypropylene (PP), manufacturers create a separator that is both a structural backbone and a high-speed safety fuse. The primary reason for using a trilayer structure is to exploit the different melting points of the two materials to prevent thermal runaway. Polyethylene (the middle layer) has a relatively low melting point of ~130°C to 135°C.
