Coaters turn a slurry, ink, or precursor solution into a controlled film — and the right deposition method depends almost entirely on viscosity, wet thickness, substrate format, and how solvent comes off. This section groups the coating platforms most commonly used in battery, fuel-cell, electrolyzer, SOFC/SOEC, and sensor R&D, so you can pick a method by the physics of your formulation rather than by what happens to be on the bench.
Browse by deposition method:
- Dip Coaters — withdraw a substrate from a precursor bath at a controlled speed; the workhorse for sol-gel layers, layer-by-layer assembly, separator and membrane functionalization, and protective overcoats, with nano-speed, multi-position carousel, and roll-to-roll variants.
- Ultrasonic Spray Coaters — piezo-atomized low-velocity mist that deposits dilute catalyst inks and ionomer dispersions onto membranes, GDLs, and fragile or non-flat substrates; the standard tool for CCMs and gas-diffusion electrodes.
- Electrospinning Coaters — high-voltage Taylor-cone jet that draws non-woven nanofiber mats for separators, interlayers, catalyst supports, and solid-electrolyte scaffolds, with environmental control over humidity and temperature.
- Tape Casting Coaters — doctor-blade and wire-rod metering on a vacuum bed for electrode pastes, ceramic green tapes (LLZO, LATP, LAGP, MLCC), and thick fuel-cell catalyst layers, with IR or top/bottom heating to prevent skinning.
- Screen Print Coaters — squeegee-and-mesh patterned deposition of thick, high-viscosity pastes for SOFC/SOEC electrolytes and electrodes, thick-film sensors, and tubular cells, in manual, semi-automatic flat-bed, and curved-substrate formats.
- Accessories — slot-die heads, adjustable-gap film applicators, R2R unwind/rewind handling units, and matched cell-format fixtures that pair with the coaters above.
If your film is sub-micron and your ink is dilute, start with ultrasonic spray; for thick electrodes and ceramic tapes, use tape casting; for patterned thick-film deposits on rigid substrates, screen print; for nanofiber mats, electrospinning; for sol-gel and conformal overcoats, dip.
