Two variables drive selection: maximum force (matched to your platen area, since pressure equals force divided by area) and whether you need heated platens with closed-loop temperature control. Hot-press capability is essential for ionomer-bonded MEAs and for any thermoplastic-binder lamination, where the bond forms only above the polymer's softening point. Cold pressing is fine for ductile-foil work, pellet pre-compaction, and most coupon prep.
