Wet electrode fabrication is the slurry-based route that still produces the vast majority of lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and adjacent battery electrodes — and on a pilot line every step in this collection compounds: a poorly mixed slurry cannot be rescued by a perfect calender, and a perfectly densified electrode that retains residual moisture will still gas in the first cycle. This collection groups the four equipment families that move active material from powder to assembly-ready electrode, in the order a researcher actually uses them.
- Wet Mixers — planetary vacuum slurry mixers, three-dimensional shaker mixers, nano sand mills, and vacuum slurry filters that turn powders, binders, and solvents into a homogeneous, agglomerate-free paste. Choose shaft count and dispersion intensity by binder system (PVDF/NMP vs aqueous CMC/SBR) and by whether carbon nanotubes or sub-micron actives are in the formulation.
- Tape Casting Coaters — benchtop and pilot doctor-blade coaters with vacuum chucks, infrared or top/bottom heating, and multi-head chassis that accept doctor blade, wire rod, or slot die. Used for sheet-fed electrode coupons, ceramic green tapes, and functional separator or catalyst coatings.
- Rolling Presses — cold and hot calenders, synchronous and asynchronous-speed rollers, and steel or rubber nips for densifying coated foils, fibrillating PTFE in dry-process electrodes, and laminating membranes to electrodes. The single piece of equipment that most directly shapes cycle life and rate capability.
- Vacuum Ovens — single- and multi-chamber ovens from 100-150 degC standard service up to 200-250 degC high-vacuum models, used to drive bound water out of binder networks and porous coatings before glovebox transfer and cell assembly.
If you are setting up a new wet electrode line, walk the list top-to-bottom: a planetary vacuum mixer sized to your batch, a vacuum-bed tape casting coater for your foil width, a pressure-controlled calender, and a multi-chamber vacuum oven so anode and cathode recipes can dry in parallel. For dry-process electrodes that skip the slurry step, see asynchronous-speed presses under Rolling Presses; for the broader equipment landscape, see Battery Equipment.
