In aqueous battery systems, standard aluminum current collectors face severe corrosion because water’s high dielectric constant facilitates the dissolution of aluminum ions (Al3+). To counteract this, current collectors must be modified with protective barriers to maintain stability. Adding specialized additives (like Li3PO4 or Li2CO3) to the electrolyte can precipitate a stable Al(OH)3 or AlPO4 layer on the foil, reducing corrosion current density by up to three orders of magnitude.
