Aluminum metal is a highly promising anode material for aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs). The round disc shape is suitable for coin cell assembly and testing in aluminum-ion battery application (especially for CR20XX coin cell), while the sheet or roll shapes can be used for pouch cells. 

The main features of AIBs are shown below:

  • The "Trivalent" character enable one aluminum ion (Al3+) carries three electrons, whereas lithium ion (Li+) only carries one. Theoretically, this allows for very high volumetric energy density (theoretical 8000 mAh/cm3).

  • It is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust, making it far cheaper and more sustainable than lithium or copper.
