Aluminum(III) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (commonly designated as Al(TFSI)3) is a specialized, highly dissociable metal-organic salt engineered as a primary electrolyte solute for advanced rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs). By pairing a trivalent aluminum cation (Al^{3+}) with bulky, hydrophobic, and electrochemically stable bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI-) anions, Al(TFSI)3 overcomes many of the severe corrosion and passivation hurdles associated with traditional halide-based aluminum salts.

The functional roles of Al(TFSI)3 salt in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Halide-Free Electrochemistry: Unlike traditional chloroaluminate ionic liquid electrolytes (e.g., AlCl3/EMIC), which are violently water-reactive and aggressively corrode standard battery casing and current collectors, Al(TFSI)3-based formulations provide a substantially milder, halide-free chemical environment. (2) Solvation Sheath & Anode Compatibility: The large TFSI- coordination shell alters the aluminum-ion solvation structure, mitigating dense charge-transfer barriers and facilitating smooth aluminum stripping/plating behavior at the anode interface. (3) Oxidative Stability & Current Collector Protection: The robust trifluoromethanesulfonyl framework resists oxidative degradation, supporting wider electrochemical windows and protecting current collectors from premature pitting corrosion.

Its main electrochemical application domains are: (1) Rechargeable Aluminum-Ion Batteries: Utilized in non-aqueous organic or ionic-liquid solvent blends to enable reversible intercalation of aluminum species into advanced cathode hosts (such as transition metal oxides, sulfides, or carbon-based frameworks). (2) Safe Prototype Cell Assembly: Deployed to simplify laboratory-scale pouch and coin cell manufacturing, drastically reducing the severe glovebox containment hazards and off-gassing risks characteristic of molten or highly acidic AlCl3 systems.
