TCBQ (Tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone, commonly known as chloranil) powder is a high-performance organic small-molecule cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Unlike traditional transition metal oxide cathodes (such as manganese or vanadium oxides), TCBQ relies on fast, sustainable, and reversible organic redox chemistry, making it a promising candidate for eco-friendly, high-rate energy storage.
The key electrochemical and redox chemistry features of TCBQ as organic cathode in aqueous zinc-ion battery are: (1) Reversible Carbonyl Redox Reaction: The electrochemical activity of TCBQ is governed by the reversible conversion of its carbonyl groups (C=O) to enolate groups (C-O}-). During discharge, the quinone rings accept electrons and bind incoming cations. (2) Cation and Proton Co-Insertion: Depending on the specific pH and electrolyte formulation, TCBQ cathodes typically operate via the reversible storage of divalent zinc ions (Zn^{2+}) and/or protons (H+) into the molecular crystal lattice, facilitated by strong coordination bonding. (3) Rapid Reaction Kinetics: Because organic small molecules store charge through ion-coordination rather than sluggish solid-state lattice diffusion, TCBQ exhibits exceptionally fast charge-transfer kinetics, supporting high-rate performance.
