The mesh-type 316L stainless steel (SS316L) is a 3D structural substrate used primarily in high-power lithium-ion batteries and next-generation lithium-metal anodes. Unlike the "microporous" foil which is a solid sheet with holes drilled into it, the mesh is created by stretching and expanding a copper sheet to form a series of round openings. The 3D architecture of mesh offers several distinct advantages for high-performance cells:
(1) Higher Active Material Loading: The open "pockets" of the mesh allow you to pack more slurry into the electrode, increasing the overall energy density of the cell.
(2) Enhanced Electrolyte Penetration: In aqueous or flow systems, the mesh ensures the electrolyte can reach the center of the electrode, reducing "dead zones" and improving rate capability.
(3) Superior Mechanical Interlocking: Active materials (like sulfur or manganese oxide) physically lock into the mesh pores, which prevents the delamination that often happens with flat foils during cycling.
(4) Wider Electrochemical Window: SS316L remains stable at higher voltages (up to ~5V) without the pitting or dissolution common in aluminum current collectors.
