An operando CT (Computed Tomography) split cell is a highly specialized fixture designed to allow high-resolution X-ray imaging of a battery's internal structure while it is actively cycling. The primary challenge for these cells is balancing X-ray transparency with the high mechanical pressure required for solid-state battery (SSB) stability. An operando CT cell must incorporate: (1) X-ray Transparent Windows: Typically made of Beryllium (Be), Glassy Carbon, or thin Kapton polyimide. Beryllium is the gold standard due to its high strength and low X-ray absorption, though it requires careful handling. (2) Minimal "Dead Path": The distance between the X-ray window and the electrode must be as small as possible (often < 2 mm) to prevent the X-rays from scattering or losing intensity before hitting the sample. (3) Radial Symmetry: For CT (which requires 360° rotation), the cell is often cylindrical and slim to minimize the change in X-ray path length as the cell rotates.
