BFEC {Bis(2-fluoroethyl) Carbonate is a recently developed fluorinated linear carbonate used as a high-performance electrolyte additive in advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), particularly for stabilizing the high-capacity lithium-metal anode. BFEC is a sacrificial additive that preferentially decomposes on the highly reactive lithium metal anode surface during the first few cycles. The decomposition of BFEC releases fluorine, which facilitates the formation of a Lithium Fluoride (LiF)-rich SEI layer. Moreover, BFEC has been shown to improve the performance of full cells pairing the Li metal anode with high-voltage cathodes, such as NCM622.
