Bis(2-methoxyethyl) carbonate (commonly designated as BMC, BMEC, or diethyl ether-functionalized organic carbonate) is an advanced symmetric carbonate ester engineered as a high-performance electrolyte solvent, co-solvent, and functional additive for next-generation lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. By integrating polar methoxyethyl functional groups into the linear carbonate backbone, BMC provides a unique combination of high boiling points, enhanced safety profiles, and modified solvation behavior compared to conventional short-chain alkyl carbonates.

Its functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Solvation Sheath & Anion Coordination Tuning: BMC modifies the primary alkali metal ion coordination shell, balancing salt dissociation against restrained electron-donating reactivity. This helps encourage stable ion transport dynamics across varying temperature regimes. (2) Interphase (SEI/CEI) Passivation: Due to its specific reduction and oxidation potentials, BMC participates in early-stage electrochemical formation, contributing to the construction of a robust, protective Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on anodes and a stabilizing Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) on positive electrodes. (3) Thermal Safety & Volatility Suppression: With a remarkably high boiling point (~232 °C) and a safe flash point (~86 °C) compared to traditional low-boiling linear carbonates (like DMC or EMC), BMC heavily suppresses bulk electrolyte volatility and reduces fire hazards during thermal abuse or high-temperature storage.

Its primary electrochemical application domains are: (1) High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Full Cells: Integrated into master carbonate electrolytes (such as LiPF6 blends) to improve thermal stability, reduce gassing, and support cells operating at elevated voltage thresholds. (2) Advanced Sodium-Ion Systems: Utilized as a specialized co-solvent or additive to tailor the interfacial chemistry and solvation structure for sodium metal or hard carbon anodes.
