PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone) contains a strong polar lactam ring (a cyclic amide) that enable it to form strong, clear, protective films, which contributes to its binding and dispersing properties. PVP's main value in the battery industry is often as a dispersant for both cathode and anode slurries, although it does function as a binder as well. As a binder alone, it may be inferior to highly functionalized polymers like PAA or CMC/SBR in terms of long-term cycling stability for high-volume change electrodes.
