Silver foam sheets (often engineered with high porosity (~85) represent an elite class of three-dimensional, open-cell metallic scaffolds. While transition metals like nickel and copper are the standard workhorses for industrial cells, silver (Ag) foam is specified for cutting-edge electrochemical systems due to its unmatched electrical conductivity, distinct catalytic pathways, and extreme chemical stability under alkaline and oxidizing conditions.
(1) In Carbon Dioxide Electrolyzers (CO2RR): Silver foam is highly prized as a cathode substrate/catalyst support for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 into carbon monoxide (CO). Silver features a unique d-band electronic structure that selectively binds intermediate carbon species, favoring the suppression of the competing Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER). Moreover, the highly porous foam morphology alters the local mass-transport dynamics. It ensures that gaseous CO2 molecules cleanly reach the catalyst-electrolyte interfaces at high current densities, minimizing concentration polarization.
(2) In Hydrogen Fuel Cells (Oxygen Reduction Reaction): Inside Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) or Alkaline Fuel Cells (AFC), silver foam can serve as a highly conductive gas diffusion layer (GDL) or flow-through current collector on the cathode side: Silver exhibits intrinsic catalytic activity toward the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) in alkaline environments. The open structure allows oxygen gas to diffuse toward the membrane assembly while facilitating the removal of byproduct liquid water, avoiding internal cathode flooding.
(3) In Advanced Battery & Supercapacitor Systems: Silver foam acts as a high-loading 3D current collector for high-power energy storage systems: When used as a host framework for lithium or sodium metal deposition, silver behaves as a philic substrate. It exhibits low nucleation overpotentials for alkali metals, regulating initial ion seeding to suppress the growth of dangerous, short-circuiting metallic dendrites. Silver's elite alkaline corrosion resistance makes it a highly stable current collector for porous zinc anodes or bifunctional air cathodes, resisting the aggressive dissolution typical of standard metals.
