Tantalum (Ta) foil is considered the "ultimate" corrosion-resistant metal for electrochemical systems. While it shares many properties with titanium and molybdenum, it surpasses them in stability, particularly in high-temperature acidic environments (above 100°C) where even noble metals like platinum can struggle.
(1) In battery system, tantalum foil current collectors enable the study of batteries using imide salts (like LiTFSI) without the need for fluorine-based additives. Unlike aluminum, tantalum resists anodic dissolution at high voltages in these specific chemistries.
(2) In high temperature electrolyzer application field, tantalum foil is arguably the only material with sufficient corrosion resistance for High-Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (HT-PEM) electrolyzers using phosphoric acid at temperatures above 130°C.
(3) In fuel cell system, tantalum foil (or Ta-nitride coatings) acts as a "shield" for stainless steel bipolar plates, maintaining ultra-low interfacial contact resistance even after long-term exposure to acidic membranes.
