Ethyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl carbonate (often abbreviated as ETFEC or framed alongside related fluorinated alkyl carbonates like bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) carbonate or TFEC) is an asymmetric fluorinated organic carbonate engineered for advanced energy storage systems. By incorporating a fluorinated ethyl group into the linear carbonate architecture, ETFEC balances electrochemical oxidation resistance with favorable interphase-forming capabilities, serving as a specialized co-solvent and functional additive for high-voltage and high-safety lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries.

Its main functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Anode Passivation & SEI Engineering: Because of its lower reduction potential compared to standard alkyl carbonates, ETFEC preferentially decomposes during initial formation cycles. This reduction pathway facilitates the precipitation of an inorganic-rich, flexible Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) containing metal fluorides (LiF) that isolate the reactive anode (such as graphite, silicon composites, or lithium metal) from ongoing parasitic reactions. (2) High-Voltage Cathode Stability: The electron-withdrawing trifluoroethyl chain deactivates the carbonyl oxygen against premature electrophilic/oxidative attack. This elevates the anodic stability threshold, suppressing electrolyte degradation when operating high-nickel layered oxides (NMC811, LiCoO2) above 4.3 V–4.5 V. (3) Flammability Mitigation: Similar to symmetric fluorinated carbonates (such as TFEC), the introduction of dense fluorine fractions lowers the overall heat release rate and elevates the flash point profile of the bulk liquid electrolyte formulation, aiding in abuse-tolerant battery design.
