1,1,1-Trifluoro-2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethane (commonly designated as TMEE) is an advanced fluorinated asymmetric ether engineered as a high-performance solvent, co-solvent, and interphase-directing electrolyte component for next-generation high-energy and fast-charging lithium-metal batteries. By introducing a terminal trifluoromethyl group onto an ethylene glycol monomethyl ether backbone, TMEE bridges the high solvating power of traditional glymes with the exceptional electrochemical and interfacial stability of fluorinated media.

Its functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Optimized Ionic Transport & Fast-Charging Kinetics: TMEE facilitates rapid ion transport and high bulk ionic conductivity, supporting fast-charging requirements without introducing excessive interfacial resistance.  (2) Fluorine-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) Passivation: Due to its tailored reduction potential, TMEE participates in early-stage electrochemical reduction, driving the formation of a dense, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) heavily enriched with lithium fluoride (LiF) on lithium metal anodes to suppress dendrite propagation. (3) High-Voltage Anodic Stability: The electron-withdrawing inductive effect of the terminal trifluoromethyl group suppresses premature oxidative decomposition, allowing the electrolyte to maintain stability when paired with high-cutoff-voltage transition metal oxide cathodes.

The primary electrochemical domains are: (1) High-Energy and Fast-Charging Lithium-Metal Batteries (LMBs): Integrated into concentrated or localized electrolyte configurations (such as paired with high-concentration LiFSI), enabling exceptional Coulombic efficiencies, stable stripping/plating behavior, and high retention rates under rapid C-rate testing. (2) High-Voltage Full Cells: Utilized in formulations coupled with nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes (such as NMC811) operating above 4.3 V to prevent parasitic oxidative breakdown and transition-metal dissolution.
