Add-Ons
[EMIM][PF6] (1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) is a classic, widely studied room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) featuring an aromatic imidazolium cation paired with a phosphorus-based hexafluorophosphate anion. While historically foundational in early ionic liquid research due to its relatively low viscosity and ease of handling compared to other RTILs, its application as a primary battery electrolyte solvent comes with notable constraints, particularly regarding chemical stability and moisture sensitivity.
The key physicochemical characteristics of EMIMPF6 are: (1) Low Initial Viscosity & Good Conductivity: Because of the smaller size and planar structure of the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cation coupled with the symmetrical PF6- anion, EMIMPF6 exhibits relatively low viscosity and high ionic conductivity at room temperature compared to bulkier pyrrolidinium or piperidinium-based ionic liquids. (2) Non-Volatility & Thermal Stability: Like other ionic liquids, it is non-flammable, possesses negligible vapor pressure under normal operating conditions, and provides high thermal stability, eliminating fire hazards associated with conventional volatile organic carbonate solvents.
