Py13PF6 (1-Methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium hexafluorophosphate) is a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) that pairs an aliphatic, 5-membered pyrrolidinium cation with the phosphorus-based hexafluorophosphate (PF6^-) anion. By combining the low viscosity and superior reduction resistance of a 5-membered saturated ring with the familiar PF6^- anion, this formulation attempts to bridge conventional lithium salt chemistry with ionic liquid thermal safety. However, like other PF6-based ionic liquids, its practical implementation comes with distinct chemical hurdles.

The key physicochemical features of Py13PF6 are: (1) Good Cathodic Stability: Unlike aromatic cations (such as imidazolium in EMIMPF6), the saturated 5-membered pyrrolidinium ring (Py13) exhibits strong resistance against reductive decomposition, making it more compatible with carbonaceous or alkali metal anodes. (2) Improved Transport Dynamics vs. Piperidinium: Because the 5-membered pyrrolidinium ring is less bulky and conformationally constrained than 6-membered piperidinium rings (like PP13), Py13-based ionic liquids typically exhibit lower fluid friction and moderately better ionic mobility at comparable temperatures. (3) Thermal Safety & Non-Volatility: It is non-flammable, possesses negligible vapor pressure, and maintains high thermal stability, eliminating the fire risks inherent to volatile organic carbonate solvents.
