TFEP (Tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) Phosphate) is a well-known flame-retardant electrolyte solvent for lithium-ion battery (LIB) research. The main role of TFEP is to significantly enhance the thermal safety of the lithium-ion battery. The presence of both fluorine and phosphorus atoms makes it an extremely effective flame retardant. TFEP increases the electrolyte's overall thermal stability and flash point. During a thermal event (like heating or a short circuit that leads to thermal runaway), TFEP decomposes and releases non-flammable gases. These radicals enter the gas phase and scavenge the highly reactive, flammable radicals produced by the decomposition of the main carbonate solvents. This interruption of the combustion chain reaction is highly effective.
