Fullerene C60 powder (Buckminsterfullerene) and its functionalized derivatives are utilized as specialized conductive additives, interfacial modifiers, and multifunctional stabilizers in advanced battery electrodes (lithium-ion, lithium-sulfur, and solid-state systems). With a truncated icosahedron geometry (60 sp2/intermediate sp3 hybridized carbon atoms) and a low-lying Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO), C60 delivers unique electronic, ionic, and radical-scavenging capabilities beyond traditional 1D/2D carbon additives.
The main structural and functional features of the Fullerene C60 are: (1) Point-to-Point Nano-Conductive Bridging: Unlike 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or 2D graphene sheets that form macroscopic conduction networks, zero-dimensional (0D) C60 clusters (~ 0.71 nm cage diameter) penetrate tight interparticle voids between active material grains (e.g., Ni-rich NMC, LFP, or Prussian Blue analogs), reducing localized contact resistance and micro-polarization. (2) Free Radical & Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) Scavenging: C60 acts as a "radical sponge". At high charging cut-off voltages (> 4.3 V vs. Li/Li+), cathode surfaces release reactive singlet oxygen and free radicals that decompose carbonate solvents; C60 readily captures these radicals via multi-addition reactions, preventing continuous electrolyte oxidation and gas evolution. (3) In Situ Formation of LixC60 Mixed Conductors: During the initial reduction cycle, C60 accepts electrons and coordinates with lithium ions to form lithiated fullerenes (LixC60, where x can range up to 6–12). Intercalated fulleride phases exhibit mixed electronic and high Li+ ionic conductivity, acting as an in situ ionic conduit at the electrode-electrolyte interface. (4) Polysulfide Catalysis & Immobilization (Li-S Systems): In lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cathodes, C60 enhances charge transfer to insoluble Li2S2/Li2S species and chemically anchors soluble lithium polysulfide intermediates, mitigating the polysulfide shuttle effect.
