Fullerene C70 powder is an ellipsoidal 0D carbon nanomaterial used in battery systems as a functional conductive and interfacial additive. While conventional carbon additives (such as Carbon Black Super P, MWCNTs, and Graphene) are used in bulk to construct long-range conductive percolation pathways, C70 acts as a sub-nanometer electronic conduit, solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) stabilizer, and radical scavenger
The main features of the Fullerene C70 are: (1) Sub-Nanometer Interstitial Electronic Hopping: With molecular dimensions of ~ 1.06nm * 0.78 nm, C70 easily penetrates sub-nanometer grain boundaries and porous active material structures (e.g., SPAN Li-S cathodes, hard carbon, or high-nickel layered oxides) where larger carbon blacks and CNT bundles cannot reach. It facilitates local electron hopping across particle contacts. (2) Fulleride SEI Formation & Dendrite Suppression: C70exhibits strong electron affinity (LUMO ~ -4.0 eV) and undergoes multi-electron reduction. When added to the electrode surface or liquid electrolyte, it reduces at low potentials to form uniform, lithiated/sodiated fullerides (LixC70 / NaxC70). This creates a mechanically robust, highly ion-conductive SEI that homogenizes electric fields and suppresses dendrite formation on alkali metal anodes. (3) Radical Trapping & Cathode Protection: Operating as a molecular "radical sponge," C70 captures reactive oxygen species and decomposition radicals generated at high cutoff voltages (>4.3 V), mitigating electrolyte degradation and transition metal dissolution. (4) Polysulfide Anchoring in Li-S / Na-S: The curvature and electron delocalization of the C70 cage promote physical and chemical adsorption of soluble intermediate polysulfides (Li2Sx), reducing shuttle-effect capacity decay.
