Sustainion® X37-50 (developed by Dioxide Materials) is a commercial imidazolium-functionalized styrene-copolymer anion-exchange membrane (AEM) with a nominal dry thickness of 50um. It is designed for electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR), anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), and alkaline electrochemical flow reactors requiring high hydroxide/carbonate conductivity and alkaline chemical resistance.
The main features of the Sustainion, X37-50 AEM are: (1) Resistance to Alkaline Degradation: Traditional quaternary ammonium groups easily degrade via Hofmann elimination or SN2 nucleophilic attack. The steric hindrance of the tetramethylimidazolium functional headgroup stabilizes the positive charge against ring opening in high-pH environments. (2) Low Faradaic Polarization in CO2 Reduction: Exhibits high selectivity and high transport numbers for bicarbonate (HCO3^-) and carbonate (CO3^{2-}), facilitating CO2 conversion to CO, ethylene, or formic acid at high current densities (>200--500 mA/cm2). (3) High Alkaline Water Splitting Performance: Delivers low area-specific resistance (ASR) in 1 M KOH circulating electrolytes, achieving current densities exceeding 1.5-2.0 A/cm2 below 2.0 V in AEM electrolyzer cells.
