SELEMION™ cation-exchange membranes (CEMs), developed and manufactured by AGC Inc. (formerly Asahi Glass Company), are homogeneous, hydrocarbon-based ion-exchange membranes. They are widely deployed in electrodialysis (ED), diffusion dialysis, and electrolysis processes across water treatment, table salt production, chemical purification, and critical mineral extraction (such as direct lithium extraction).
SELEMION CMVN (Standard Electrodialysis Grade): The workhorse general-purpose cation-exchange membrane in the SELEMION family. It is thin, highly flexible, and offers low area resistance (~ 2.0 Ω*cm2) paired with high permselectivity for alkali ions. The key use cases are tap water/brackish water desalination, wastewater concentration, and food industry process streams (e.g., soy sauce and whey desalination).
SELEMION CSO (Monovalent Cation Selective): Engineered with a specialized surface charge modification layer that selectively permits the transport of singly charged cations (Na+, K+, Li+, NH4+) while rejecting multivalent cations (Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+}, Fe^{3+} through steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion. The key use cases are: (1) seawater concentration for commercial table salt (NaCl) production without scaling the stack with CaSO4 or Mg(OH)2. (2) Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) and brine refining, separating Li+ from background Ca^{2+} and {Mg}^{2+} ions prior to precipitation.
SELEMION CMTE (High-Strength / Reinforced Grade): A thick (~ 250 um), highly durable membrane designed for demanding mechanical and hydraulic environments. It boasts a burst strength exceeding 1150 kPa (over 5× stronger than CMVN) to resist differential pressure fluctuations and physical wear. It is mainly used for large-scale commercial electrodialysis plants, high-concentration brine stacks, and industrial processes with frequent cleaning-in-place (CIP) cycles or high osmotic differential pressures.
SELEMION HSFN (Acid Recovery & Hydrogen Ion Selective): A specialized cation-exchange membrane tailored for high-acidity conditions. Standard CEMs often suffer from proton leakage or rapid degradation in strong mineral acids, but HSFN provides extremely low area resistance (~ 0.9 Ω*cm2 in 0.25 M H2SO4 specifically for proton (H+) transport. The main applications are recovery of mineral acids (H2SO4, HCl, HNO3) from pickling liquors, metal etching wastewater, and hydrometallurgical leach solutions via electrodialysis or diffusion dialysis.
