Platinum/Iridium Oxide (Pt/IrO2) coated electrodes are composite or mixed-catalyst structures widely utilized in electrochemical water splitting, unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs), and severe-environment industrial electrolysis. By combining Platinum (the gold-standard catalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction) with Iridium Oxide (the gold-standard catalyst for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction in acidic media), these electrodes achieve exceptional durability, high electrical conductivity, and low overpotentials.
Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cells (URFCs) / Bifunctional Electrodes: the co-coating Pt and IrO2 provides dual functionality: (1) IrO2 drives the OER during water splitting with minimal overpotential and high chemical stability under high anodic potentials. (2) Pt drives the ORR during fuel cell discharge mode.
Anodes for Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers (PEMWE): Even when used solely as an anode for water electrolysis, pure IrO2 suffers from poor intrinsic electrical conductivity. Co-depositing or forming a composite coating of Pt/IrO2 on a titanium substrate (e.g., Ti mesh, Ti felt, or porous transport layers): (1) Significantly lowers charge-transfer resistance. (2) Synergistically boosts OER kinetics compared to pure IrO2. (3) Protects the underlying Titanium substrate from passivating oxide (TiO2) formation under aggressive acidic/oxidizing conditions.
