Hydrophilic carbon cloth is a flexible, woven Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) and Porous Transport Layer (PTL) engineered from high-purity carbon yarns. Unlike non-woven carbon paper—which consists of short carbon fibers bound in a rigid resin matrix—carbon cloth features a defined woven textile weave (typically plain or twill weave). When surface-modified for strong hydrophilicity (water contact angle < 30 degree), carbon cloth excels in applications requiring high mechanical flexibility, high macroporosity, and rapid liquid wicking.

For Electrolyzer Cathodes (PEMWE & AEMWE): On the cathode side of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) or Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) water electrolyzers, liquid water must be drawn continuously to the catalyst interface while evolved hydrogen gas (H2) escapes. (1) Capillary Wicking: Hydrophilic surface functionalization acts like a sponge, pulling water through the thick woven structure via capillary pressure to prevent local dry-out at current densities >2 A/cm2. (2) Underwater Aerophobicity: Under liquid, the hydrophilic fibers repel gas bubbles, causing generated H2 bubbles to detach at very small diameters. This minimizes bubble masking on active catalyst sites.

In flow-cell architectures for CO2 reduction, hydrophilic carbon cloth is often paired with a catalyst layer to facilitate liquid catholyte flow while maintaining active ion transfer.
