Hydrophobic carbon cloth (frequently referred to as wet-proofed carbon cloth) is a flexible, woven Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) treated with a fluoropolymer—typically Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE / Teflon)—to impart water-repellent properties. While hydrophobic carbon paper is stiff and brittle, hydrophobic carbon cloth provides extreme mechanical durability, high drapeability, and superior elasticity, making it ideal for cells subjected to high mechanical shear, non-uniform compression, or heavy liquid water generation.

In high-humidity PEMFCs operating at high current densities (>1.5 A/cm^2), the cathode oxygen reduction reaction produces large volumes of liquid water. (1) Liquid Water Removal: The PTFE coating increases the water contact angle (>130-150 degree), creating strong capillary repulsion that expels liquid water from the woven pores. (2) Unobstructed Gas Channels: By preventing water from pooling inside the GDL macropores, reactant gases (O2 and H2) can easily diffuse to the catalyst-coated membrane (CCM) without triggering catastrophic cathode flooding.

In electrochemical CO2 reduction cells, hydrophobic carbon cloth acts as a stable gas-diffusion electrode substrate: (1) Flooding Prevention: Prevents aqueous catholyte/anolyte from seeping through the GDL into the gas feed channels. (2) Triple-Phase Boundary: Maintains a robust gas-liquid-solid reaction interface where gaseous CO2 meets dissolved catalyst sites without liquid blockages.
