A Platinum (Pt) sheet with a PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) holder is one of the most common and robust counter electrode (CE) configurations used in electrochemical research. The high surface area of a sheet (as opposed to a wire) is critical for ensuring that the counter electrode reaction does not become the "bottleneck" of your experiment.
Platinum (The Catalyst): Pt is selected for its extreme chemical inertness and its high exchange current density for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). This ensures that the CE can easily provide whatever current the Working Electrode (WE) demands without significant polarization. (2) PTFE (The Shield): The PTFE body or "shroud" protects the electrical connection (usually a Titaniun or Stainless Steel rod) from the electrolyte. Since your previous research involves organic-compatible cells and high-pressure reactors, PTFE is the ideal choice due to its universal solvent resistance and thermal stability.
