Add-Ons
3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-Tridecafluorooctyl acrylate (TFOA) is a highly specialized fluorinated monomer featuring a long perfluoroalkyl side chain (C6F13CH2CH2-). In advanced energy storage research, TFOA is heavily utilized as a functional monomer or co-monomer for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and in situ-polymerized ionogel/separator systems to engineer high-voltage stability, enhanced interfacial wetting, and superior safety profiles in lithium-metal and high-energy-density batteries.
Its main structural and functional features are: (1) Chemical Structure: An acrylic backbone tethered to a 6-carbon fluorinated hydrophobic tail via an ester linkage. (2) High Thermal & Electrochemical Stability: The dense shielding of carbon-fluorine (C–F) bonds provides exceptional resistance to oxidative decomposition at high voltages. (3) Low Surface Energy & Hydrophobicity: Imparts strong amphiphilic or fluorous characteristics to the polymer network, promoting unique micro-phase separation domains within the gel electrolyte. (4) Solubility: Readily soluble in common battery solvents (such as EC, DMC, EMC, and THF) and compatible with standard free-radical thermal or UV initiators (e.g., AIBN or BP).
The core advantages of TFOA as monomer for GPEs are: (1) Suppression of Parasitic Reactions & High-Voltage Shielding: Due to the electron-withdrawing inductive effect of the perfluoroalkyl groups, TFOA-based polymer chains exhibit a wide electrochemical stability window (frequently exceeding 4.8 V to 5.0 V vs. Li/Li+). This prevents electrolyte oxidation when paired with high-voltage cathodes (like high-nickel NCMs or high-voltage spinels). (2) In Situ Polymerization for Superior Interfacial Contact: TFOA can be blended directly into liquid organic electrolytes along with an initiator and infiltrated into porous separator matrices (such as polyacrylonitrile [PAN] or PVDF-HFP) or electrode pores. Upon mild thermal or UV activation, in situ polymerization locks the liquid electrolyte into a robust cross-linked 3D gel network, eliminating interfacial voids and drastically reducing interfacial resistance. (3) Fluorous-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) Formation: The reductive cleavage of fluorinated segments on the polymer backbone contributes to the formation of an inorganic-rich, highly stable SEI and CEI layer containing lithium fluoride (LiF) and fluorophosphates. This protects both the lithium metal anode against dendrite growth and the cathode against transition metal dissolution.
