Add-Ons
Cobalt-Free Single-Crystal Lithium-Rich Manganese-Based Oxide (Li1.5Ni0.25Mn0.75O2.5, LRMO) is an advanced, high-capacity cathode material designed for ultra-high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries operating at voltages approaching ~ 4.8 V vs. Li/Li+.
Its main features are: (1) Dual-Mechanism Capacity: Combines traditional transition metal redox (Ni^{2+/4+}) with reversible anionic oxygen redox activated during the initial high-voltage charge plateau above 4.5 V, yielding an exceptionally high reversible specific capacity exceeding 250-280 mAh/g. (2) Single-Crystal Morphology Advantage: By eliminating internal grain boundaries inherent in polycrystalline lithium-rich oxides, the sub-micron single-crystal morphology drastically suppresses intergranular microcracking induced by anisotropic lattice volume changes during deep oxygen-redox activation and high-voltage cycling. (3) Cobalt-Free Sustainability: Relies exclusively on earth-abundant nickel and manganese, significantly lowering material costs and eliminating geopolitical supply-chain vulnerabilities associated with cobalt. (4) Vulnerability: Suffers from gradual voltage decay (voltage fade) over extended cycling due to localized transition-metal layer migration and structural rearrangement from layered to spinel-like phases, requiring precise surface passivation.
