A High-Voltage LiCoO2 (LCO, 4.6 V) Wet-Coated Cathode Electrode with a high mass loading of 20 mg/cm2 represents an advanced, high-energy-density configuration designed to push conventional cobalt-based cathodes beyond standard 4.2V–4.4V limits. While wet-slurry casting at higher thicknesses (> 15 mg/cm2) presents challenges with binder migration and structural cracking, precise formulation and optimized drying schedules enable stable high-voltage performance.
The typical slurry formulation can be referenced as: (1) Active LCO Powder (95.5-97.0 wt%): High-tap-density, single-crystal or large polycrystalline LCO particles with tailored particle size distributions to optimize packing. (2) Conductive Additives (1.5-2.5 wt%): A hybrid network combining Super P carbon black (for point-to-point particle contact) and Vapor Grown Carbon Fibers (VGCF) or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to maintain long-range electronic percolation through the thick electrode. (3) Binder (1.5-2.0 wt%): High-molecular-weight PVDF (such as Solef 5130 or Kynar HSV 900) dissolved in N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to provide high peel strength without insulating active surfaces.
The round disc shape with single-side coating is suitable for coin cell testing, while the rectangle sheet shape with single- or double-side coating is designed for single-layer or multiple-layer pouch cell testing.
