A Polycrystalline LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) Powder with a Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3) Coating is an engineered high-energy cathode material specifically designed to overcome the severe interfacial degradation and high interfacial resistance challenges encountered in sulfide- and halide-based all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSBs).

The functional roles of LiNbO3 coating on the polycrystalline NCM811 are: (1) Suppression of Space-Charge Layer (SCL) Impedance: Uncoated high-nickel cathodes in direct contact with sulfide solid electrolytes suffer from a mismatch in chemical potential, resulting in spontaneous lithium-ion migration across the interface. This forms a resistive space-charge layer depleted of Li+, creating massive interfacial resistance. The fast ion-conducting LiNbO3 interlayer bridges this potential drop, facilitating smooth Li+ transfer. (2) Prevention of Interfacial Parasitic Reactions: Sulfide electrolytes are notoriously susceptible to oxidation and catalytic decomposition at high operating voltages (> 3.8 V) when in direct contact with reactive transition-metal oxides. The dense LiNbO3 coating acts as a chemical barrier that stops direct cross-talk, preventing sulfur oxidation, transition-metal reduction, and the growth of insulating interfacial byproducts (Li3PO4, metal sulfides, etc.). (4) Scavenging Surface Residuals: The wet-chemical coating process helps neutralize or convert highly basic surface lithium residues (such as residual LiOH and Li2CO3) into electrochemically stable lithium niobate phases, mitigating gassing and gelation during composite cathode slurry preparation.
