Rubidium Triflate (RbOTf}, or Rubidium trifluoromethanesulfonate, RbCF3SO3) is an alkali metal salt functional additive evaluated in non-aqueous electrolytes for advanced rechargeable batteries.  While closely related to RbTFSI, RbOTf combines the large Rb+ cation with a smaller, rigid triflate anion (CF3SO3^-) rather than the bulkier, flexible imide anion (TFSI-).

Self-Healing Electrostatic Shield (SHES): Like other heavy alkali cations (Cs+, Rb+), Rb+ operates through an electrostatic shielding mechanism on lithium-metal anodes: The reduction potential of Rb+ (~ -2.93 V vs. SHE) is slightly less negative than that of Li+ (~ -3.04 V). At high local current densities (e.g., emerging dendrite tips), accumulated Rb+ ions create a localized positive electric field without being reduced into metallic rubidium. This electrostatically repels incoming Li+ ions to adjacent flat areas, forcing smooth, planar lithium deposition.

Triflate-Derived Interphase Construction: The triflate anion (OTf-) exhibits distinct decomposition characteristics on anode and cathode surfaces: Under reductive conditions at the lithium anode, OTf- breaks down to form an inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) composed of lithium fluoride (LiF) and sulfur species (Li2S). This layer offers high mechanical strength and fast Li+ interfacial transport. Unlike imide salts (TFSI-), which can cause aluminum current collector pitting at higher potentials (> 3.8 V), triflate species are generally less corrosive toward aluminum, providing better high-voltage current collector stability.
