Lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) powder (battery/trace-metal grade) is one of the foundational electrolyte salts in lithium-ion battery electrochemistry. In contemporary cell development, it serves as the premier academic and analytical reference salt because it is completely hydrolytically stable—it cannot decompose into hydrofluoric acid (HF) in the presence of trace moisture. However, its character as a potent chemical oxidizer has caused it to be excluded from mass commercial production in favor of LiPF6.

Key physicochemical features for the LiClO4 as LIB electrolyte salt are: (1) Zero $\text{HF}$ Formation & Complete Hydrolysis Immunity: LiClO4 is completely immune to this equilibrium. It generates zero fluorinated acid, which will prevent transition-metal (Ni, Mn, Co) dissolution from layered oxides (NMC811, LMO, LNMO). (2) Broad Anodic Stability & Minimal Al Pitting: The tetrahedral perchlorate anion exhibits high intrinsic oxidative stability. In carbonate mixtures (e.g., EC/DMC), it remains electrochemically stable up to ~ 4.6 V vs. Li/Li+. Unlike imide-based salts (LiFSI, LiTFSI), LiClO4 does not aggressively pit the aluminum cathode current collector below 4.2 V. (3) High Transference & Moderate Desolvation Barrier: Due to the relatively low charge density of the diffuse ClO4^- anion, LiClO4 dissociates easily in high-dielectric solvents like ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC), yielding high Li+ transference numbers and low interfacial charge-transfer resistance.
