Add-Ons
Needle coke powder—derived from petroleum or coal tar pitch—is a highly graphitizable, premium carbon material characterized by its needle-like anisotropic microstructure, high electrical conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, and excellent mechanical strength. When utilized as the carbon matrix or framework precursor for Silicon/Carbon (Si/C) composite anodes, needle coke serves multiple critical functions: (1) Conductive Elastic Backbone: Unlike amorphous hard carbon, needle coke provides structured graphitic domains that maintain long-range electronic conductivity throughout repeated volume expansion and contraction cycles of silicon. (2) Volumetric Buffering Cavities: When pulverized and engineered with secondary pore structures, needle coke particles accommodate embedded nano-silicon domains, buffering the massive ~ 300-400% volumetric swings of silicon and preventing particle pulverization. (3) Scalable Precursor Cost: Offers a high-purity, industrially scalable, and cost-effective alternative to synthetic graphite or specialized graphene frameworks for mass-producing high-capacity composite anodes (~ 500-700 mAh/g).
