Add-Ons
A Benchtop Lab-Scale Electrodialysis (ED) Testing System is a compact, highly versatile electrochemical separation unit designed for academic research, feasibility studies, membrane screening, and small-volume wastewater treatment, desalination, or mineral extraction process development.
The key components of the ED testing system are: (1) Membrane Stack ("The Heart"): Configured with alternating Anion-Exchange Membranes (AEMs) and Cation-Exchange Membranes (CEMs)—such as low-resistance hydrocarbon or perfluorinated sheets—separated by specialized flow-distributing gaskets/spacers to create repeating cell pairs (Diluate and Concentrate chambers). The end plates constructed of rugged transparent materials (like acrylic or PTFE) coupled with titanium or DSA (Dimensionally Stable Anode) current-collector electrodes. (2) Fluid Handling & Hydraulic Loops: (i) Multi-Channel Peristaltic or Magnetic Drive Pumps: Independent closed-loop or open-loop circulation circuits for the diluate stream, concentrate (brine) stream, and electrode rinse solution (typically maintained separately to prevent chlorine gas evolution or pH polarization at the electrodes). (ii) Feed Reservoirs: Pyrex glass or polypropylene tanks (typically 0.5 L to 2.0 L capacity for lab-scale systems) equipped with sampling ports and temperature probes. (3) Instrumentation & Control Package: (i) DC Power Supply: High-stability, low-ripple DC source operating under constant current or constant voltage modes. (2) Inline Sensors: Real-time digital monitoring for conductivity (to track ion depletion/desalination kinetics), pH (to monitor water splitting or acid/base generation), and temperature. (iii) Pressure Gauges & Flow Meters: Rotameters or digital mass/volume flow sensors paired with needle valves to balance hydraulic pressures across the delicate membrane stack and prevent internal cross-leaks.
