Testing zinc-air batteries with organic electrolytes (non-aqueous or hybrid systems) requires specific cell materials that resist swelling or degradation from solvents like Dimethylformamide (DMF), Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC), or Acetonitrile. Standard alkaline-grade plastic cells (often made of Acrylic/PMMA) may fail when exposed to these solvents.

For organic-compatible testing, you should prioritize cells constructed from the following inert materials: (1) PTFE (Teflon): The gold standard for chemical universal compatibility. It resists almost all organic solvents and high temperatures. (2) PEEK: Excellent mechanical strength and high resistance to organic chemicals. (3) 316 Stainless Steel: Typically used for the structural body and current collectors. For maximum protection against corrosion in some organic salts, an optional Gold (Au) coating is often applied to internal surfaces.

When selecting or building your kit, verify these organic-compatible components: (1) O-Rings: Ensure they are Viton (FKM) or Chemraz/Kalrez (FFKM). Standard Nitrile (Buna-N) O-rings will swell and leak in most organic electrolytes. (2) Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL): Since organic electrolytes have different surface tensions than KOH, you may need a GDL with a specific hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance to prevent "flooding" of the air electrode. (3) Sealing: For non-aqueous testing, the cell must be compatible with glovebox assembly to prevent moisture from entering, which can trigger the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) even in organic media.
