An MEA (Membrane Electrode Assembly) using a Nafion membrane is the core component of a PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) water electrolyzer, where water is split into hydrogen and oxygen gases using electrical energy.
For electrolysis, the MEA is almost always fabricated as a CCM, where catalysts are applied directly to the Nafion film to minimize interfacial resistance. (1) Anode (Oxygen Evolution Reaction - OER): Uses Iridium Oxide (IrO2) because the environment is highly acidic and oxidative. THE typical loadings range from 1.0 to 2.0 mg/cm2. (2) Cathode (Hydrogen Evolution Reaction - HER): Uses Platinum on Carbon (Pt/C). The typical loadings are relatively lower, around 0.3 to 0.5 mg/cm2.
