Developing high-loading Na₄Fe₃(PO₄)₂P₂O₇ (NFPP432) dry electrodes is a significant step toward making sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) commercially competitive, particularly for long-cycle life and safety-critical applications. NFPP is an ideal candidate for dry processing due to its structural stability.
NFPP is a "polyanion" material with a 3D framework that allows fast sodium-ion diffusion. However: (1) Electronic Conductivity: Like most phosphates, NFPP is an insulator. High loading increases the electron path length, necessitating a robust conductive network. (2) Particle Morphology: NFPP particles are often micron-sized clusters. For dry electrodes, the particle size distribution must be optimized to ensure even distribution within the PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) fibril matrix.
Na₄Fe₃(PO₄)₂P₂O₇ (NFPP) coated on aluminum foil electrode (disc, sheet) can be used as sodium-ion battery cathode. The round disc shape with single-side coating is suitable for coin cell testing, while the rectangle sheet shape with single- or double-side coating is designed for single-layer or multiple-layer pouch cell testing.
