Sodium tetraphenylborate (NaBPh4, where Ph = -C6H5) is a non-coordinating, bulky organoborate salt primarily utilized as a model electrolyte salt in non-aqueous sodium and sodium-ion battery research, non-aqueous redox flow batteries, and fundamental electrochemical studies. While common commercial sodium salts (NaPF6, NaFSI, NaClO4) rely on small, inorganic anions, the massive tetraphenylborate anion (BPh4^-) provides unique physical and electrochemical properties—along with distinct operational constraints.

Key physicochemical features for the NaBPh4 as SIB electrolyte salt are: (1) Weak Ion Pairing & High Transference Number: Because the single negative charge of the boron center is shielded by four bulky phenyl rings, the electrostatic charge density of BPh4^- is diffuse. It dissociates readily in moderate-to-high dielectric media without strong ion-pairing. The bulky hydrodynamic volume of the anion severely impedes its mobility through polymer matrices and liquid solvent channels. Consequently, the sodium-ion transference number in NaBPh4^-based solid/gel polymer electrolytes is significantly higher compared to small-anion salts like NaPF6, helping suppress concentration polarization. (2) Hydrolysis and Fluorine-Free Chemistry: Unlike fluorinated salts (NaPF6, NaFSI, NaBF4), NaBPh4 does not contain fluorine. When exposed to trace moisture, it cannot generate hydrofluoric acid (HF). This makes it non-corrosive toward glass labware, sensitive oxide cathodes, and separator matrices prone to acid etching. At cathodic potentials within its stability window, NaBPh4 does not cause severe pitting corrosion on standard aluminum current collectors.
