Sodium perchlorate (NaClO4) powder (battery/electrochemical grade) is the standard reference and model electrolyte salt in academic and early-stage sodium-ion battery (SIB) research. Its primary utility comes from being fluorine-free and hydrolysis-inert: unlike NaPF6, it cannot generate hydrofluoric acid (HF) when exposed to trace water, making it a reliable baseline for studying moisture-sensitive cathodes (Prussian Blue/White, layered oxides) and fundamental interphase phenomena.

Key physicochemical features for the NaClO4 as SIB electrolyte salt are: (1) Zero HF Generation & Hydrolysis Immunity: NaPF6 reacts spontaneously with sub-ppm moisture or crystal water to generate toxic, corrosive HF and POF3. NaClO4 is hydrolytically inert. It does not generate acidic decomposition products in the presence of water, making it the preferred salt for: (i) Prussian Blue & Prussian White (PBA/PWA): Eliminates acid-catalyzed Fe/Mn transition metal leaching from the open cyanide framework. (ii) Basic Layered Oxides (NFM, NNMO): Prevents chemical etching of particle surfaces by acidic species. (2) Broad Anodic Stability (>4.5 V vs. Na/Na+): The tetrahedral perchlorate anion exhibits high oxidative resistance in cyclic carbonates like propylene carbonate (PC) and ethylene carbonate (EC), allowing unhindered evaluation of high-voltage cathodes like P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 (4.2 V) and Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (4.3 V). (3) Low Formula Weight Gravimetric Benefit: At 122.44 g/mol, it requires roughly 27% less mass than NaPF6 (167.95 g/mol) and 40% less than NaFSI (203.11 g/mol) to achieve a target molarity and reducing inactive electrolyte dead weight.
