An operando Raman cross-sectional split cell is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools for battery research. Unlike a standard operando Raman cell that looks at the "top" surface of an electrode through a window, a cross-sectional cell allows you to see the "through-thickness" of the battery—watching ions move from the anode, through the separator, and into the cathode in real-time.

The operando cross-sectional split cell can be used to study the following aspects: (1) Reaction Heterogeneity: Seeing if the top of the electrode (near the separator) reacts faster than the bottom (near the current collector). (2) Ion Gradient Mapping: Visualizing the salt concentration gradients in the electrolyte. (3) Interface Evolution: Watching the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) grow or lithium dendrites pierce the separator.
