Testing solid-state batteries (SSBs) with a three-electrode split cell is significantly more challenging than testing liquid-electrolyte batteries. In SSBs, you cannot simply "dip" a reference electrode into a liquid; instead, the reference must be integrated into a solid-state stack while maintaining constant, high mechanical pressure. In solid-state systems, the RE must make intimate physical contact with the solid electrolyte (SE) layer without disrupting the ion flow between the Anode and Cathode.

A professional-grade split cell for SSBs (like the CompreCell or MTI Split Cells) usually consists of: (1) Insulated Sleeve: Usually made of PEEK or Zirconia Ceramics to contain the solid electrolyte powder or pellet and prevent short circuits. (2) Plungers: Stainless steel or gold-plated rods that act as current collectors. (3) Pressure Control: A micrometer screw or a calibrated spring set that allows you to dial in specific megapascals (MPa) of pressure. (4) Reference Feedthrough: A side port where a micro-wire reference electrode can be inserted into the center of the solid electrolyte pellet.
