TPO-L (Ethyl phenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphinate) is a highly efficient, liquid-form Type I photoinitiator (C18H21O3P) widely utilized in advanced energy storage research for the UV-curing of Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and solid-state polymer electrolytes. By absorbing near-UV or violet light, TPO-L rapidly generates free radicals to initiate the polymerization of acrylate, methacrylate, and thiol-ene network precursors directly within porous separator membranes and electrode assemblies.

Its functional roles in GPEs synthesis are: (1) Rapid In Situ UV-Curing in Sealed Cells: TPO-L enables the rapid conversion of low-viscosity liquid electrolyte/monomer precursors (such as PEGDA, TPGDA, HDDA, or PEGMA blended with carbonate solvents and LiPF6/LiTFSI) into solid or dimensionally stable gel networks upon exposure to long-wavelength UV light (compatible with transparent pouch cell windows or quartz-faced coin cells). (2) Elimination of Thermal Stress During Curing: Unlike thermal initiators (such as AIBN or BPO) that require prolonged heating (55°C-70°C), UV initiation via TPO-L occurs rapidly at ambient temperatures, preventing thermal expansion mismatch between cell components and avoiding premature thermal degradation of volatile solvent components. (3) Uniform Network Crosslinking: Because TPO-L dissolves completely into the liquid electrolyte mixture without phase separation, free radicals are generated homogeneously throughout the separator pores and electrode microstructures, resulting in a uniform 3D polymer mesh with high ionic conductivity (>10^{-3} S/cm).
