A Split Automatic Warm Isostatic Press (WIP) is specialized laboratory equipment designed to apply omnidirectional (isostatic) hydrostatic pressure at elevated temperatures (typically 50°C - 200°C).It is widely used in advanced battery research—particularly for solid-state batteries (SSBs), ceramic electrolyte pellets (e.g., LLZO, NASICON), and pouch cell post-densification—where uniform multi-axial pressure is required to eliminate internal voids, improve grain boundary contact, and maximize ionic conductivity.
Split Design: The main hydraulic press unit and heating/vessel module are physically separated from the electronic control unit and hydraulic pump system via flexible high-pressure lines and electrical cables. This design allows the press assembly to be placed inside an inert-atmosphere glovebox (Ar/N₂) to process air- and moisture-sensitive materials (such as sulfide-based solid electrolytes like LPSCl), while keeping electronics safely outside. Automatic Operation: Uses a PLC touch-screen interface for programmable multi-stage pressure ramping, dwell time (holding time), temperature control, and automated decompression.
The key functions & applications are: (1) Solid-State Battery Cell Densification: Applied to assembled solid-state pouch cells or pellet cells to achieve intimate solid-solid contact between cathode particles, solid electrolyte, and metal anodes without causing directional shear stress. (2) Ceramic & Composite Powder Compaction: Isostatic pressure eliminates internal density gradients and stress concentration points common in uniaxial pellet pressing, producing ultra-dense green bodies prior to sintering. (3) Polymer / Electrolyte Membrane Lamination: Warm pressing above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of polymer matrix materials (e.g., PEO, PVDF-HFP) soft-binds layers together uniformly.
