A 10,000 RPM High-Speed Dispersing Mixer (often called a high-speed dissolver or homogenizer) is a precision laboratory or pilot-scale instrument designed to break down agglomerates, wet out solid powders into liquids, and create highly stable suspensions or emulsions. At 10,000 RPM, the tip speed of the blade creates immense shear forces, which is particularly critical when preparing high-viscosity slurries, such as those used in advanced battery electrodes, fuel cell inks, or ceramic suspensions.
Unlike a standard paddle mixer that simply circulates material, a dispersing mixer relies on hydraulic shear. (1) Sawtooth Blade (Cowles Dissolver): The most common geometry is a flat blade with directional "teeth" along the edge. (2) Suction Effect: As the blade rotates at high speeds (up to 10,000 RPM), it draws liquid and solids toward the center of the disc and flings them outward radially. (3) High-Shear Zone: The highest shear occurs just millimeters away from the edges of the teeth. This velocity gradient tears apart agglomerated particles (like carbon black, carbon nanotubes, or active material powders) and forces them into a uniform state.
