An electric coin cell crimper is a significant upgrade over manual hydraulic versions. It provides the consistent sealing pressure required to minimize contact resistance and prevent electrolyte leakage, which is especially critical when testing sensitive materials like MXenes or sulfur-based cathodes.

Electric crimpers offer several technical benefits: (1) Precision Control: You can set the exact sealing pressure (typically in metric tons or psi). This ensures every cell in a test series is identical. (2) Gas-Tight Integrity: Consistent pressure ensures the gasket is deformed perfectly every time, which is vital for long-term cycling or high-temperature tests. (3) Ergonomics: In high-throughput labs, manual pumping leads to fatigue and inconsistent sealing toward the end of a batch. (4) Glovebox Compatibility: Most electric models are designed with a compact footprint and remote control boxes to fit inside argon-filled gloveboxes without taking up excessive space.

Maintenance:

To maintain the precision of an electric crimper:

(1) Die Cleaning: Electrolyte salts (especially LiPF6) are corrosive. If a cell leaks during crimping, the die must be cleaned immediately with ethanol or DI water to prevent pitting.

(2) Calibration: Periodically check the pressure sensor against a calibrated load cell to ensure the "set" pressure matches the "actual" force applied.

(3) Gasket Alignment: Ensure the coin cell "cup" is centered in the die. Off-center crimping is the #1 cause of short circuits in newly assembled cells.
