Because dual-stage rotary vane pumps use oil to seal the internal vanes, the exhaust stream naturally carries a dense aerosol of sub-micron oil droplets—especially during the initial "roughing" phase from atmospheric pressure down to medium vacuum. Without an exhaust filter, this mist coats laboratory surfaces and creates inhalation hazards.
The air moves from the inside out through a multi-stage borosilicate microglass or fiberglass element. Tiny oil droplets impinge on the fibers, merge into larger drops (coalesce), and gravity pulls them down to the bottom of the housing.
