A Manual Screen Printing Coater is the most basic yet essential tool for researchers transitioning from simple drop-casting or hand-painting to more controlled electrode fabrication. It is normally used to deposit consistent layers of high-viscosity slurries onto ceramic or metallic supports. Unlike automatic versions, a manual coater relies on the operator's hand to provide the squeegee pressure and speed, but it provides a fixed frame and alignment system that is far superior to free-hand methods.
A laboratory-grade manual screen printer typically includes: (1) Base with Vacuum Chuck: A flat surface (often aluminum or ceramic) with micro-holes connected to a vacuum pump. This is critical for holding your Ni-YSZ anode supports or thin foils perfectly flat during the stroke. (2) Adjustable Frame Holder: A set of clamps that hold the screen mesh. It allows for "Off-Contact" adjustment—the small gap between the mesh and the substrate that ensures the mesh "snaps" back, leaving a clean print. (3) Squeegee & Flood Bar: Squeegee: A rubber/polyurethane blade used to push the slurry through the mesh. Flood Bar: Used to spread a thin layer of slurry across the mesh before the actual printing stroke. (4) X-Y-Theta Fine Tuning: Micrometer knobs that allow you to move the substrate table with sub-millimeter precision for multi-layer alignment (e.g., aligning a GDC buffer layer exactly over a YSZ electrolyte).
