SS304 (Type 304 Stainless Steel) Milling Balls—chemically composed of approximately 18% Chromium, 8% Nickel, and a maximum of 0.08% Carbon, with the balance being Iron—represent the industry standard for general-purpose, economical metal grinding media. Belonging to the austenitic class of stainless steels, SS304 media balances high structural durability with excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion and many organic chemicals, making it a staple in both laboratory and pilot-scale ball milling operations.

The key advantages of SS304 milling balls are: (1) Zero Shatter Risk (High Fracture Toughness): Unlike ceramic media (such as alumina, glass, or even stabilized zirconia) which can catastrophically shatter if subjected to excessive dry-milling impact forces or accidental thermal shock, SS304 is a ductile alloy. Under extreme mechanical stress, an SS304 ball will deform slightly rather than fracturing, completely protecting your milling jar and machine from catastrophic internal fragments. (2) High Kinetic Impact Energy: Because kinetic energy is directly proportional to mass (Ek = 1/2*mv^2), the high density of SS304 (7.93 g/cm3) allows it to generate significantly higher impact forces at a given rotational speed (RPM) than alumina or nylon. This makes it highly efficient for tearing apart fibrous organic materials, fracturing coarse minerals, or blending heavy metal powders.
